Earlier this year, Boston joined the growing number of cities that have turned to Canada in search of more affordable prescription medications. Mayor Thomas M. Menino implemented a plan that is expected to save the city of Boston over $1 million over the next year by importing prescription medications for city workers and retirees. City council member Felix Arroyo blamed the rapidly rising cost of drugs on the big pharmaceutical companies. We need a limit to profits when our lives are on the line, he said.

Many other cities have already taken the same steps to order their prescription drugs from Canada to cut back on costs. Springfield, Mass., was the first city in the nation to implement a system for its employees and retirees to purchase their prescription medication from Canada. According to former mayor Michael Albano, more than 2,200 people participate in the program. Other cities that have followed the lead of Springfield are Montgomery, Ala., and Burlington, Vt., as well as Boston.

In its first year, Montgomerys plan for city employees and retirees saved the city almost half a million dollars. Burlingtons plan has had similar results. When asked if he intended to wait for the approval of the FDA before launching his program, Burlington mayor Peter Clavelle said, We dont intend to wait for their blessing.

Because the FDA is based near Montgomery, the actions taken by the city may be under closer watch than other cities. The associate commissioner of the FDA told the Washington Post, Clearly the fact that the county in which the majority of FDA employees live and work would ignore the FDAs fundamental statutes is an example of the level of concern about the high cost of drugs.

Many other municipalities have seen the results of these programs and have already begun to implement similar initiatives. As the number of cities and states with such programs grows, supporters are confident that the pressure will force the federal government to finally ease U.S. restrictions on drug imports.

Recent research has evidence that reveals that a newer class of anti-psychotic drugs may not be as effective in treating patients suffering from the mental condition called Schizophrenia, as older class drugs in treating the illness.

It was hoped that the newer class of drug would result in the patient experiencing less side-effects than those experienced using the older class of drugs. However, with research in this area being scarce, a recent trial has discovered quite the opposite. Claims that the newer class of drug would be more effective than the older class has never been backed up by evidence.

A recent trial involving 227 patients over a 52 week period did not find the newer class of drug to be more effective in reducing the side-effects and improving quality of life. The results showed that patients taking the different drugs showed similar results on a 52 week trial, measuring quality of life and side-effects at exactly the same points in time. It has been found that better quality of life and relief from symptoms from those who took the older class of drug was experienced than those who were taking the new class of drug. Another observation from the trial was that patients showed no preference for one class of drug over the other. There is also no meaningful difference in price between the older class of drug and the new ones.

With such clear evidence suggesting that the newer class of drugs are not as effective as the older class of drug, it would be difficult to see the benefit in prescribing the newer class of drug over the older class drugs. Jeffrey A. Lieberman, M.D., from Columbia University in New York's College of Physicians and Surgeons, states that newer anti-psychotic medications are "not the great breakthrough in therapeutics they were once thought to be."

When an organism gets into your body and causes an infection, your body gathers its defences and fights against them. This is the basic principle of how vaccines work.

Certain cells in your blood make what are called antibodies, molecules which are designed to attack specific germs and viruses. These attach to the invaders in your bloodstream and prevent them from invading other cells. Each virus or bacterium has an individual shape, and the antibodies are designed to fit exactly to that shape.

This is how vaccines work to convince your body that the vaccination is a full-blooded attack by the offending viruses or bacteria, and stimulate them into action to develop the memory or blueprint for the antibody in the event of future invasion.

This is all done by your white blood cells. You have two types called B cells and T cells. The B cells manufacture the antibodies while the T cells have two functions. The helper T cells help the B cells to make the antibodies while the killer T cells kill any cells which have been invaded by the viruses or bacteria, and prevent them from reproducing. . How vaccines work to stimulate this action is to mislead the white cells into believing that your body has been infected.

Your body reacts to kill the invaders in two ways: directly through the antibodies, and indirectly through the T cells destroying any infected cells and preventing reproduction.

Viruses cannot reproduce by themselves: they have to use the hosts cells for this. If the T cells continually kill off any invaded cells, the invaders themselves must eventually be killed off by the antibodies If the virus or bacterium is strong and reproduce too quickly, the host can be overcome before it can produce enough antibodies to kill them off. The pus which occurs during an infection is the mix of dead white blood cells and bacteria/virus cells destroyed by them.

If your body survives the attack, your B cells retain a memory of the structure of the invaders and should the same viruses or bacteria ever return, antibodies can rapidly be produced and the infection killed off before it starts. The stimulation of this memory is exactly how vaccines work.

Vaccines produce the same memory effect without the patient having to suffer the disease. The organisms that cause the disease are either killed or weakened, then introduced into your body. The strength is calculated to be just enough to enable your white cells to manufacture the antibodies. This is how vaccines work to give you protection against future infection without actually making you ill. The strength of the vaccine is designed to allow this. The dead vaccine can also work, but less efficiently, and the effect is not generally as long lasting.

The live vaccines produce life-long immunity after only one or two doses, but the dead, or inactivated, ones need multiple doses to get the correct effect. Some dead vaccines even need booster doses throughout your life. Examples of these are tetanus and diphtheria vaccines, normally given together every 10 years as the Td vaccine. The measles vaccine is an example of a live vaccine.

Vaccinations do not affect your ability to fight off other infections you have not been immunized against; in fact a 2002 German study indicated that you are likely to suffer fewer infections in general if you have had your quota of vaccinations. It is unknown exactly how vaccines work to achieve this, but it is believed that vaccination strengthens the immune system generally, and strengthens the body against other secondary infections.

How vaccines work to achieve this secondary effect is not fully understood, but it appears that unvaccinated children may have a reduced ability to fight off a secondary infection resulting from the natural disease, such as pneumonia which is frequently a secondary infection in measles cases. Most deaths through measles are actually due to a secondary infection with pneumonia.

However, how vaccines work to give you immunity to the disease vaccinated against is basically by fooling or stimulating your body into producing antibodies, and the memory of their structure should the same bacteria or viruses appear again.

Special areas in the pancreas gland, the islets of Langerhans, produce a hormone called insulin. This hormone is a protein of small size. Insulin stimulates muscle cells and other body cells to take up glucose from the blood and convert the glucose to glycogen, a kind of starch, and then store the glycogen. By need the body cells convert the glycogen to glucose and use it as fuel. In this way insulin keeps the glucose level in the blood at a normal size.

By diabetes type I the cells producing insulin are destroyed. Then less glucose is taken up from the blood into the body cells and utilized there, and glucose accumulates in the blood.

THE CAUSES AND MECHANISMS OF DIABETES TYPE 1

The cause of the disease is not well known. An auto-immune response attacking the insulin producing cells in the langerhansian islets may be a cause. Virus infection may be another cause. The disease also is to some extend inherited.

When the glucose uptake into the body cells is reduced, but glucose instead accumulates in the blood, the following physiological effects occur:

-The body cells do not get enough fuel for the work they shall do. -The molecular thickness (osmality) of the blood increases. This causes water to be pulled out from the body tissues and into the blood. The tissues thus get dried out and the urine production increases. -The tissues begin to break down protein and fat to get energy, causing weight loss and muscular reduction.

The symptoms of diabetes type 1 are a consequence of these mechanisms.

SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES TYPE 1

The disease often starts suddenly. Often children or young people are attacked by the disease. The lack of insulin causes an increased amount of blood sugar. Early symptoms of the disease are:

-Increased urine production -Dehydration (lack of water in the body) -Abnormally high thirst as a consequence of increased urine production -Dryness in the mouth -An abnormal high appetite -Feeling extremely tired and weak -Weight loss, even when one eats well -Impaired vision

If the blood sugar level is not stabilized to a normal value, there will be an accumulation of chemicals in the body called ketones, and this condition is called diabetic ketoacidosis. This serious condition can lead to coma and death. The signs of ketoacidosis are:

-Vomiting, -Pain in the stomach -Rapid breathing, -High pulse rate -Somnolence (abnormal tendency to sleep)

In the long term, diabetes type 1 can severely hurt the blood vessels in vital organs. This can further cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys or other body organs.

TREATMENTS OF DIABETES TYPE 1

Diabetes type 1 is treated with insulin injections. Implanting insuline cells in the pancreas is an experimental treatment. Another experimental treatment is to implant stem cells in the pancreas that can develop into new insulin producing cells.

Another important module of the treatment is regulation of the amount of sugar and fat consumed through the diet so that it fits together with the insulin-amount injected. Also regular monitoring of the blood sugar level to regulate the insulin amount is an important part of the treatment.

There are also natural products in the market that can help to normalize the blood sugar level by diabetes type 2. Those products cannot heal the disease or replace insulin injections, but they can help the body to regulate the blood sugar level. These products contain minerals that are working components of enzymes that stimulate the glucose metabolism in the body. They also contain herbs that have been used for a long time in traditional medicine to regulate the glucose level and that have proven their effects in scientific studies.

Perhaps every womans wildest fancy is to get super abs, sexy bums and fabulous thighs. Perhaps thats why muscle and fitness for her is such a hot topic everywhere. You try every neighborhood gym, the Atkins diet, lots of pills and what not. You keep hopping from one diet to another for a flatter tummy but in vain. The trick is to follow a regular healthy diet instead of trying to follow some impossible diet plan.

In a way strict dieting is comparatively easier since you usually know what to eat and how much to eat. But the problem comes when the quantity and number of acceptable food is so short that it is not so sweet. On the other hand, everyday healthy eating might be confusing since you dont know exactly what and when to eat but since the forbidden foods are acceptable in moderation so it is easier to follow it for a longer time. The diet should merge into a womens lifestyle, keep her in high spirits and of course give complete muscle and fitness to her.

All this information on muscle and fitness for her is incomplete without talking about the right choices for a healthy diet. So what should the womans diet consist of? Fitness experts advice staple foods like eggs, blueberries, strawberries, oatmeal and oat bran along with whey protein powder. Coffee is fine for addicts, only if taken in moderate amount. When it comes to snacks then fat free cottage cheese, peanut butter, fat free popcorn, yogurt and nuts are allowed.

The intake of carbohydrates and starch should depend on the womans lifestyle and work schedule. She may try replacing bread and rice with some healthier options like vegetables. It is important to estimate her calorie requirements as well as calories intake. She should also make note of what she eats, how much she eats and also when she eats.

Another issue in the discussion of muscle and fitness for her is pills and supplements. Vitamin-mineral combinations, energy pills, herbal tonics there are so many choices but very little time. It is true that the right supplements can not only help you to look and perform better but also feel great and energized; but the correct choice is still a mystery. The best way is to take the correct supplement depending on your need.

Women intending fat loss should take a combination of caffeine and ephedrine that can help you loose even one pound of fat every week. Women who intend to be athletes and need to do a bit of muscle building should take ceratine and glutamine to increase resistance power. Apart from it protein is vital for every woman. Protein is burned for energy as well as to support muscles; it is also essential to retain the bodys shape. If you are looking for a quick muscle building or recovery then go for supplements that contain HMB. It wouldnt be out of place to add that though supplements play an important role in boosting muscle fitness for her but overdose can lead to complications too.

Leg Exercises are crucial in developing a strong, lean, firm physique. Too often guys skip these in favour of concentrating on the upper body. Women skip them for fear they'll end up with chunky legs. That's all hog wash. You need to do leg exercises to gain muscle tissue be it mass or lean, and they are crucial in cutting weight and burning fat.

The reason for this has little to do with your muscles and more with your nerves. In order to stimulate the body into adapting and building lean muscle tissue you need to stress as much muscle as possible. The leg exercises below are designed specifically to stimulate the body into just that. Without The leg exercises below are among the best of the best and will stimulate tone and strengthen your whole lower body. It's one of my secrets to quick body transformation. Building big biceps are a must for everyone trying to build muscle mass. And if youre trying to build bigger guns on your arm then you need to make sure you train them the right way, other wise youre just wasting your time. And believe it or not it can actually take a very long time before you start seeing results if youre training your biceps the wrong way.

So to help you build bigger biceps extremely quickly Im going to share 3 top tips I use to build my biceps in no time flat.

Build Big Biceps Tip #1 Hit em From ALL Angles.

Your bicep muscle is made up of two main parts. To keep things simple Ill just refer to them as the inner bicep and the outer bicep. The good thing is most bicep exercises allow you to work both parts simultaneously which is very good for us.

In order to build big biceps you have to hit em from all angles. Which means you have to make sure you train your lower bicep (the part closest to your forearm), your outer bicep, your inner bicep (the part thats closest to your chest) and your upper bicep.

Make sure when you workout your biceps you train all of its parts if you want to build bigger, stronger and more massive biceps fast. The key to building fuller biceps is training each part specifically. So be sure to do exercises that work out each part of your bicep individually and also exercises that work out all or most of your bicep muscles simultaneously as well.

Build Big Biceps Tip #2 Focus On Form First.

This is key for weight training period, focus on your form first. If you focus on doing the exercise correctly, big biceps will definitely follow.

When you dont use proper form, you dont stimulate the deep muscle tissues needed to build bigger biceps. With poor form you actually start using other muscles instead of specifically targeting the one you want to train (your biceps).

Remember, its not quantity but quality. Think about it, you could lift 30 pounds ten times with poor form or 30 pounds six times with proper form, and you would notice much better results with the latter example. So remember, focus on form first and big biceps will soon follow.

Build Big Biceps Tip #3 Dont Cheat Only When You Have To.

When youre training your biceps, its important not to cheat only when you have to. Cheating on your biceps is very common and odds are you have been doing it or will do it if you dont pay attention.

Remember to lift the weight at your biceps and only at your biceps, dont throw your shoulder into it to help you with the workout. In order to build big biceps you have to isolate the bicep, which means only use your biceps to complete your reps.

So when do I cheat? Well, unless you have a spot while youre doing bicep workout, you can get away with cheating but only in one situation.

And that situation is once your biceps have already failed. In other words, once you have worked your biceps to failure and youre trying to complete more reps, then you can cheat your way through 1 or two more reps. But only once your biceps have failed using proper form are you allowed to cheat.

If youre ready to build big biceps and quickly just follow these 3 simple tips and youll be on the road to a big biceps in no time flat.

Its long been a myth that if you didn't get sore from your last workout, then you didnt work hard en

Its long been a myth that if you didn't get sore from your last workout, then you didnt work hard enough and you probably didn't improve. But it's just a myth. Soreness is not an indicator of a successful workout.

Muscle soreness that occurs directly after a workout is known as acute muscle soreness. Muscle soreness that appears 12 to 48 hours after exercise is known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) or post exercise muscle soreness (PEMS).

Acute muscle soreness or inflammation can last up to an hour after exercise and can be caused by a reduction in normal blood flow to the muscle and a build up of metabolic byproducts like hydrogen ions or lactic acid.

The physiological mechanisms that cause DOMS or PEMS are not completely understood but the leading hypotheses are: (1) the Connective Tissue Damage Hypothesis, (2) Skeletal Muscle Damage Hypothesis, and (3) The Spasm Hypothesis.

Connective Tissue Damage Hypothesis.

In a 1997 study, Brown, Child, Day and Donnelly reaffirmed an early study done by Abraham suggesting that DOMS or PEMS is due to a disruption in the connective tissue of the muscle and tendinous attachments.

Skeletal Muscle Damage Hypothesis.

In a 1986 study, Clarkson et al found that serum creatine kinase concentration was elevated with concentric, eccentric and isometric contractions, with greater perceived muscle soreness associated with the eccentric contraction. In a 2000 article entitled Effects of Plyometric Exercise on Muscle Soreness and Plasma Creatine Kinase Levels and its Comparison with Eccentric and Concentric Exercise (The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research: Vol. 14, No. 1, pp. 6874), the authors found Clarksons study not only proved to be true but also concluded that plyometric activities had incurred perceived muscle soreness than concentric contractions.

Spasm Hypothesis.

In a 1980 study, Devries proposed that DOMS or PEMS is due to a restriction in blood supply, generally due to factors in the blood vessels, with resultant damage or dysfunction of tissue called ischemia. As you continued to workout, further ischemia would result in more damage and "soreness." This theory was further proven by work done in 2000 by Barlas, Walsh, Baxter, and Allen.

Sources: ISSA Complete Guide to Fitness: Edition 8.1.5, Unit 15, pp. 415

DOMS or PEMS seems to be a side-effect of muscle tearing and repairing that occurs after a workout. It's an unfortunate side-effect as well because you are very sore and it takes 2 or more days for the soreness to go away. Soreness should not be a goal of training. Many people experience soreness when they do a particular exercise with a moderate to heavy weight and get a good, deep stretch. Not every person experiences muscle soreness. In fact, many do not yet they continue to make fantastic progress.

Forget soreness as an indicator or progress and use the most underutilized piece of equipment in the gym to tell you EXACTLY where you are, where you've been and if you are making forward movement.

What's the piece of equipment?

A training journal!

Your goal should be to improve on your last efforts. Getting a little bit better with each step and each workout. If you track your progress in some type of journal, its easy to see if you are improving. It's even more beneficial to track some of your body measurements (fat loss, weight gain, size on arms and legs).

Use your journal to track your progress and your perception of how you feel. When you are done with a workout, you should feel better. Not so fatigued you cant drive home. And not puking or so nauseous that it's difficult to impossible to eat post-nutrition foods. You want to push yourself and get better but blasting yourself to the point of fatigue and overtraining where you are tired 2 days later or getting so sore it takes 7 days to walk again, is not good training. It will affect your recovery and that ultimately affects your next workout like a domino effect.

Soreness is not an indicator of a good workout. That myth has been around forever. Getting tired is easy. Getting better is not. Ive never seen any proven scientific results that says soreness is a must in order to get better or stronger or bigger.

A marathon sounds intimidating, but that only makes the possibility of completing one all the more a

A marathon sounds intimidating, but that only makes the possibility of completing one all the more attractive, and impressive. You don't have to be an athlete to train for, and complete, a marathon. You can even be overweight, out-of-shape, and an all-around couch potato. All you need is determination and the will to stick to your training program.

Facts about a Walking Marathon

A marathon is 26.2 miles, and often are reserved for runners. However, many marathons and half-marathons (13 miles) are beginning to welcome walkers as well. Check for events in your area that allow walkers to participate.

First Steps

You've probably heard you should check with your doctor before starting a fitness program, and that advice is especially important when training for such a long distance event. Walking long distances can put enormous amounts of strain on your body, particularly if you're relatively out-of shape. It's important to talk with your doctor about your exercise program and any health concerns you have before beginning.

After getting your doctor's approval, you'll need comfortable shoes and clothes. Don't skimp on shoes this is not the time to pick up a pair at your local discount store. You need a shoe that fits well and that provides good support and that is designed for walking. Try the shoe on in the afternoon, when your feet are probably their largest of the day, and wear the same types of socks you'll be walking in.

When you're still walking short distances, you should be able to wear sports socks and clothing for your walks. As your distance increases, however, you'll want to invest in some socks designed to prevent blisters. On your long walk days, you may want to carry blister tape along with you just in case. Many walkers have good results with lubricants designed for runners. Keeping areas of your feet that are prone to blisters lubricated will help prevent blistering.

As for clothing, if you walk in particularly hot or cold weather, you'll need to take care not to overheat or get too cold. Visit a sporting goods store to purchase moisture wicking clothing that is suitable for your climate.

Finally, you'll need a pedometer. You can get a simple one that only counts steps for around $5-10, or you can pay as much as $50 or more for a more complex model. Regardless of the one you choose, you'll need to track your distance each walking day.

How Far is Too Far?

Even if you're out-of-shape, you'll be able to follow a marathon training program if you allow yourself time to work up to the longer distances. For your first walking week, plan on walking five days at a comfortable distance each day. Many walkers plan on resting one weekend day and one week day. Your weekend walking day will eventually become your long-distance walking day.

Let's say you're able to do only one mile comfortably for the first week. Your second week might look like this.

Monday: 1 mile Tuesday: 1 mile Wednesday: 1 mile Thursday: Rest Friday: 1 mile Saturday: 1.5 to 2 miles Sunday: Rest

You'll gradually increase your weekday walks and your weekend walk until you're walking approximately three to six miles on weekdays and up to 18 to 20 miles on your long distance day.

Avoiding Injury

The most important thing you can do to avoid injury is to increase your distance gradually. Once you've established what distance you're initially comfortable walking, you should increase your weekly distance by no more than 10 percent at a time. So if you complete five miles your first week, on your second week you should complete no more than five and a half miles. The next week, you'll complete no more than six miles, and so on.

Gradually increase your distance until you're walking about thirty miles per week. If you experience any physical discomfort, you should decrease your distance temporarily and visit your doctor if it continues.

Another technique for avoiding injury is allowing yourself time to stretch, warm up, and cool down. Stretching your muscles will prevent injury, as will beginning your walks at a slower pace and slowly increasing your speed until you've reached your walking pace. Slowing at the end of your walk will help your body adjust to the reduction in effort and aid in reducing muscle soreness.

Other Tips for Success

Stay well hydrated while walking. This is especially important in warm weather and on your long distance days, but you should develop a habit of carrying some water with you.

On your long distance days, take a high-quality snack along. Nuts and raisins are easy to carry and provide a quick energy boost for those long walks.

Consider walking a half-marathon (about thirteen miles) when you're able to walk ten miles relatively easily on your long distance days. Most marathons and half-marathons have time limits, so later in your training you'll need to consider your speed as well as your distance to ensure that you can finish within the time allotted. It will give you an opportunity to see how your body reacts to the demands of a marathon, and you'll have the experience and success to continue to motivate you through your training.

The Big Day

Reduce the length of your walks two to three weeks before the date of the marathon or half-marathon. Your weekday walks should fall to three or four miles each, and your weekend walks should be reduced to twelve miles or so each for a full marathon. Your body will need time to rest before attempting the full distance.

Don't eat anything unusual the day before or the day of the marathon. You run the risk of having something "disagree" with you, and stomach problems will almost certainly prevent your finishing the event. Instead, eat a healthy meal that includes protein and complex carbohydrates. Chicken, fish, and whole grains are good choices.

If the race offers sports drinks and water, try alternating between the two at hydrating stations. Too much of the sports drinks can cause stomach upset, but a little will help to keep your energy up.

Carry some snacks, runner's lubricant and blister tape along with you. Don't buy brand new shoes for the event this is not the time to break them in. Your shoes should be relatively new, but you should have walked two or three weeks in them to ensure that they'll be comfortable and not cause any chafing.

Remember that you've trained and planned for this day for weeks, or even months. The marathon will be a challenge, but it's one that you can overcome.

There are a variety of reasons people begin practicing yoga. Many wonder what all the fuss is about

There are a variety of reasons people begin practicing yoga. Many wonder what all the fuss is about, some have heard that it can help with flexibility and strength, and others wonder about the stress relief benefits. More than fifteen million Americans have stepped on the mat and have explored how yoga can enrich their lives, but many only see the physical benefits. Despite the growing popularity of yoga, many instructors are left wondering if many people are really missing the true purpose of the practice.

What are yoga students missing when they are only taking class to lose weight, become fit, or relieve stress? They are missing the heart of the practice and the chance to make significant positive changes in their lives. When going to a yoga class becomes something greater than just something you do for yourself every now and again, you begin to realize that it is not just about you anymore. Dedicating the practice to something greater than yourself is what draws the distinction between just doing exercise and practicing yoga.

These days, it seems that the mention of dedication, or devotion, can be a tricky subject in yoga class. People tend to be unresponsive when the idea of the divine is mentioned. It is important for yoga practitioners to know that the philosophy of yoga is inextricably linked with divinity, no matter what name is given to it or how it is incorporated. Yoga was built on the idea that there is a force greater than ourselves, and yet we are still connected to it. This is the idea of Oneness, and the idea is more than fairly comforting. Others who are religious fear a conflicting of faiths by believing in the spirituality of yoga; however, Swami Satchidananda said, The Truth is one, the paths are many. Therefore, people of any faith or belief can practice yoga. Even if a practioner of yoga does not believe in any form of divinity, this does not present a problem. They must simply recognize that the nature of all beings is joy and try to connect with that.

Now that weve gotten that sticky subject out of the way, I want to explain this idea of dedicating your practice in greater detail. Its not even so much about dedication as it is relinquishing or letting go of everything whether they be worries, fears, misunderstandings, or hang-ups. My teacher, Sharon Gannon, always promotes the idea that Youve got to get down to get up. What she means is that you need to be rooted in the here and now and be able to let go of all the fruits of your actions. Why, you ask? Why shouldnt you just keep on doing yoga to perfect your chatturangas, balance longer in tree pose, and get that yoga butt? The answer is a simple one. What are all those things going to get you in the long run?

Sure, nailing that Chatturanga feels great, and deepening your Hanumanasana (splits pose) can give you a bit of a rush. Im not denying that one bit, but what is the true purpose behind the motions? Yoga practice can help you to break a cycle, stop bad habits, and transform your life. Yes, it can do all of those things, but you have to let it. You see, you cant acquire yoga like you can dance steps or aerobic maneuvers; you have to let go of what is obscuring it. You have to let go of your preferences and simply be in the moment as a divine being.

So why do asana at all if youre not supposed to be attached to the outcome? Because the asanas help to show you the interior of your own mind, they clearly point out what youre holding on to and what you still need to work through. They transform you into the tree or the warrior and make you see what it is like to step outside of yourself, even for the briefest of moments. Asana also gives you the chance to see that both the world and you yourself are constantly changing. This, in turn, gives you the opportunity to find what is real and unchanging.

When you realize that the purpose of your yoga practice is not to keep you rooted in this world, but to let you move through it, you begin to have faith in your ability to reach the divine with your actions. It can ignite the soul and give you a sense of renewed dignity and worth. Because you know that youre not just performing the motions for your own benefit, the sense of satisfaction from your practice can grow beyond the mat. For example, have you ever had the opportunity to offer selfless service to another? Maybe youve adopted a pet and taken on the full responsibility of loving and caring for it, and, in exchange, all you have received is unconditional love from them for giving happiness and freedom. This is what the act of devotion is all aboutrealizing that its not all about the wishes and wants you only think you need.

When you start letting go of the selfish motives for practice and try to connect with something greater, you inspire your own ability to love. This is the nature of the spirit, and connecting with that is the ultimate goal of yoga practice. Samadhi is union with the divine, a connection with the source, which is true love. Everything else is negligible. As my teachers, Sharon Gannon and David Life, would say, The sheer desire for Oneness is the way to it.

Realizing that all the beings in this world are connected in this way is a remarkable step for the yogi. Once the lines between you and them begin to fade, you realize how important it is to share love and a sense of gratitude with everyone around you.

While many illnesses and diseases are well understood, prostate cancer is one of the remaining cancerous conditions that is shrouded in misunderstanding. There are several main reasons for this, not the least of which is that men as a group, simply do not want to deal with this very common no cancerous condition.

For many men, prostate cancer affects the very core of how they define their own manhood. The prostate is a key component in the sexual performance and ability of men. Prostate cancer than strikes at the very heart of how many men view themselves. In any event here are a few of the most common questions concerning prostate cancer.

1. What really is prostate cancer? Prostate cancer is any abnormal and malignant growth of cells in the tissues of the prostate gland and possibly all over and beyond the prostate.

2. What is advanced prostate cancer? This is one of the stages of prostate cancer where the cancerous cells have spread outside the prostate into other parts of the victim's body, causing damage along the way. There are four basic stages of prostate cancer.

3. What are the stages of prostate cancer?

Stage I of prostate cancer is when the cancer is only in the prostate area and hasn't spread outside the prostate.

Stage II of prostate cancer is when the cancer is still within the prostate, but is advancing.

Stage III of prostate cancer is when the cancer has now spread beyond the outer layer of the prostate into nearby tissues.

Stage IV is the stage that all men dread. In this stage of the cancer, it has spread to other parts of the body also known as metastatic prostate cancer

4. What is metastatic prostate cancer? It is another name for advanced prostate cancer where the cancerous cells have grown outside the prostate and is growing into other parts of the body. Metastatic prostate cancer is extremely serious.

5. What causes prostate cancer? There is no singular factor that causes prostate cancer. Heredity is suspected to play a large role in prostate cancer as is the race of the patient. Black men are much more likely to have prostate cancer than other groups.

6. What can I do about Prostate Cancer? If you have a prostate and are over 50 years of age, you should really consider getting a yearly prostate exam and having a simple PSA blood test done. This information will provide a baseline for future reference.

Remember that the earlier you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, the more you have to fight this deadly disease and win.

Doctors have always asked themselves why some people develop diabetes and some not, and so, by study

Doctors have always asked themselves why some people develop diabetes and some not, and so, by studying, they have discovered that there are some factors that interfere with the installation of diabetes.

The most important factor is heredity. If you have a family history of diabetes it is highly probable for you to develop this affection someday. There is a gene responsible for all this, especially for the Type II transmission. But you do not need to worry because nowadays there are many easy to apply home measurements, and you can live a normal life.

Another factor is the inappropriate diet. If you eat too much sugar, proteins, fats and refined carbohydrates, which transform into sugar, you can unleash the diabetes. Studies have shown that in the poor countries, people are not affected of diabetes in such a large number because they do not overeat. The most dangerous stuff is: biscuits, chocolate, bread, cookies, candies, pudding and ice-cream.

Obesity is a trigger for diabetes and in US, 60 to 85% of the diabetics are known as overweight. If there is too much fat, the insulin will not be able to allow the sugar in the blood to enter the muscle and tissue cells and so, the blood sugar level will be high. By losing weight one can improve the blood sugar level having to bare only a mild form of diabetes.

People who have suffered a great loss, who are worried, stressed and unhappy, who have problems in their marriage or in their business tend to develop diabetes because all these factors have an enormous impact on the human metabolism causing sugar to appear in the urine.

If you smoke, it is best for you to give up. Studies have shown that especially women who smoke 25 or more than 25 cigarettes a day have a greater risk of developing diabetes, by 40% more than those who are nonsmokers.

It is recommended to follow an active lifestyle because you lose weight, you transform sugar into energy and you sensitize your muscle and tissue cells to insulin, and the pancreas does not have to work so much any more.

Therefore, by controlling your weight, your diet and giving up smoking you can easily control diabetes and live a healthy normal life.

Body sculpting using resistance bands is a fairly new addition to the fitness world. While most know

Body sculpting using resistance bands is a fairly new addition to the fitness world. While most know that lifting weights is beneficial for the body, using bands seems like it wouldn't be as helpful for building strength or improving your muscle tone. With changes in the design and more training in how to use them, body sculpting using resistance bands has become a form of fitness that has begun to take the exercise world by storm. Not only are they effective, but these bands are inexpensive and convenient adding up to the perfect workout routine.

When you try body sculpting using resistance bands, you can choose from various levels of resistance for your fitness needs and goals. These bands will be thicker and thus harder to stretch as you workout causing your muscles to work harder. The bands are also effective because they allow for a wider range of motion than traditional weight machines and even some free weights. When you're able to move the muscle in more directions, you will be able to workout not only the major muscle groups, but also the more minor supporting muscles which adds up to a better workout.

The cost of body sculpting using resistance bands is very low when you compare it to other weight training machines. The bands generally cost not more than $50 for a good set and can be adapted to make them last longer as your fitness levels improve. For example, if the resistance on a band seems too easy for you, you can shorten the band to make the resistance harder again. These bands can also be replaced by some manufacturers and will work for all parts of the body, so you don't need to buy separate equipment for each body part. A shorter band for your upper body and a longer band for the lower body is all that is necessary.

The convenience of body sculpting using resistance bands is the strongest selling point. Because you don't have to lug around heavy weights, you can bring these bands wherever you go bringing fitness wherever you go. You could bring your resistance bands to the office, on your next vacation, etc. They are also easy to pack in a suitcase or carried in a purse if you want to sneak in fitness wherever you are. With body sculpting using resistance bands, you can make the time for fitness no matter where you are, what your budget is, or what your fitness level is. And that's a smart way of increasing your health.

One of the biggest problems faced by new mothers is how best to get back in shape. With the demands

One of the biggest problems faced by new mothers is how best to get back in shape. With the demands of the new baby, along with work and family commitments, going back to a regular exercise regimen can seem impossible, but buying a jogging stroller is a great way to solve two problems at once. With a jogging stroller, the new baby gets to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, while his or her mother gets to enjoy a stimulating workout.

As great as jogging strollers are, however, not all jogging strollers are created equal, and it is important for new mothers to shop carefully for the stroller that best meets their needs. One of the most critical decisions to be made is whether to choose a fixed wheel stroller or opt for a swivel wheel. Both choices have their own advantages, and it is important to consider those advantages carefully.

A fixed wheel jogging stroller will generally provide for greater stability and straighter tracking. In addition, the front wheel on most fixed wheel jogging strollers will be larger, providing the baby with a smoother ride. The fixed wheel jogging stroller should also be better equipped to handle bumps in the road. When deciding on a fixed wheel stroller versus a swivel wheel model, it is important for mothers to think about the areas where they will be jogging and to make their selection accordingly.

On the other hand, a swivel wheel jogging stroller can be an excellent choice for those who will not often be running with eh stroller. Jogging strollers with swivel wheels can be great choices for indoor use, such as in shopping malls and at the grocery store. The wheel on this type of stroller will generally measure 12 or less, while the wheel on a fixed wheel jogging stroller will usually be around 16. It is important, of course, for each parent to consider how the stroller will be used when making a purchasing decision.

No matter which type of jogging stroller is chosen, it is important for the stroller shopper to consider which amenities are most important. Is it important, for instance, that the stroller come with an easy folding mechanism. A jogging stroller that folds easily will be easier to transport than one that does not. Biking enthusiasts may want to look for a jogging stroller that also comes with a bike trailer. Those who plan to run off road or in rough terrain should look for a jogging stroller with a heavy duty frame and a sturdy frame.

I have been working out at a gym since I was 13 and have kept to a fairly steady routine ever since.

I have been working out at a gym since I was 13 and have kept to a fairly steady routine ever since. Although a bit cardio heavy at times, I felt that my workouts were consistent and effective. I scoffed at the thought of paying someone to train me -- after all, I can motivate myself, right?

Two years ago, I decided that I wanted to build more muscle. I have the "long and lean" look which is nice, but I wanted to actually see a bicep every once in awhile! As I started down the muscle building path on my own, I finally came to realize that it might be beneficial to have some guidance. I wanted to make sure my form was perfect and that I was following an appropriate rep/set scheme for my body type. In addition, I wanted someone to push me farther than I could push myself and someone to help get those last reps in when my muscles were near failure.

I found my trainer by doing a search on the Internet. Actually, I was looking for someone to take boxing lessons from as well, and it worked out that my trainer-to-be did both personal training and boxing lessons. Doing a search online with the words "personal trainer" and your city name is quite effective. You can also look in the phone book, the classified ads section of your local newspaper, and, of course, your gym (although my trainer is actually at a different gym than my "main" gym).

Don't get caught up in the package deals and purchase six or eight lessons before even training once with a potential trainer. You want a trainer you can get along with and who understands your fitness goals. If you are unhappy with the results you are seeing or want to change focus, tell your trainer. If they're worth keeping around, they will be happy to help.

In closing, here are the main benefits I have experienced from having a personal trainer:

1. Even if I'm not feeling motivated on a particular day, my trainer will push me anyway.
2. Although I know a lot about fitness, my trainer has been able to set up a great workout routine for me that has been better than anything I have been able to do myself. Plus, she keeps track of my progress and modifies my workouts accordingly.
3. My form is always correct.
4. My trainer spots me on heavy lifts, allowing me to push myself further than I would be able to safely do on my own.

I have found that having a personal trainer is well worth the money and has helped me tremendously with my fitness goals, and I would highly recommend it to anyone trying to take their workouts to the next level.

In the hectic rat race that many of our lives have now grown used to, there has been an alarming increase in our health problems that modern medicine cannot resolve. With stress being a root cause of up to 90 percent of all diseases, it is hardly surprising that more and more of us are turning towards health spas and regular massages to alleviate the pressures we face in our daily lives. A massage is no longer just a luxury but a vital part of obtaining and maintaining good health.

As we are lying on the table enjoying a massage, it must have passed through the minds of many of us that being a massage professional is a good career choice. After all, with the increasing demand for massages in the last decade, there has been a huge opening for massage therapy jobs.

If working alone as a massage professional, you can choose your clients and working hours and enjoy a flexible lifestyle. This is ideal especially for stay-at-home parents or spouses looking to earn some extra money. If working in a spa or clinic for others, you can enjoy the stable income while building up your experience, skills and customer base for when you strike out on your own.

However, you cannot be a massage professional and obtain a massage therapy job by simply reading books and absorbing the knowledge there. You will be dealing with the health and body of another human being on an intimate level. As such, no one would be willing to entrust themselves to you if you do not have the proper massage therapy certification.

Such certification is not as easily available as one might think. Each state in America has a different definition of massage; hence each state has different criteria when granting a massage license to an individual. A massage therapy certification from a school of massage does not automatically mean that you are legally allowed to practice massage and go into business. You still have to obtain a massage license from your states department of health or department of professional regulation.

For example, to become a massage therapist in Chicago, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation will only grant you a massage license if you are at least 18 years of age, have completed a minimum of 500 hours of supervised classroom and hands-on instruction at a state-approved massage school, and earned a minimum grade of 70 percent in all related curriculum.

The best way to get a massage therapy job is to go to the relevant agency or department of your state and find out their requirements with regards to obtaining a massage license. Only then should you go about choosing and applying at massage schools in preparation for your new career as a massage professional

Certain things may make a person ask her self if she is starting to suffer from multiple sclerosis.

Certain things may make a person ask her self if she is starting to suffer from multiple sclerosis. If a person has a blurry vision or has maybe trouble concentrating that doesnt necessarily mean that she or he are suffering from this terrible disorder. Something else may to blame for a whole other reason. Its a well known fact that multiple sclerosis has a lot of symptoms similar to a lot of other disorders of the central nervous system. Still, as said earlier, if any signs of the disease appear in any person, checking with the doctor should be the next thing to do. Early diagnosing of the disorder and early treatment has shown to greatly improve the slowing of the rate of witch the disease progresses.

A special diagnosing from your doctor may also be a bit tricky considering the fact that there isnt a specific set of rules to follow in order to correctly see if that specific person suffers from the disorder. The best thing to do is to let the doctor asses the symptoms that the patient has said he is suffering from. The next thing to do is let the doctor give you a compleat physical check in order to see if other more subtle symptoms are also present. These symptoms may be either changes in eye movement or very minute changes in speech patterns. If still a proper diagnosis cant be made further tests may include a RMI scan or a spinal tap. Treatments have shown that they are able to improve the state of the patient, and the fact is the earlier the treatment begins the better the chance is that the effect will be stronger in the patient.

People are different one from another. Thinking of this we realize that it is the same thing about how the disease affects the patient. Some people may this way experience very diverse symptoms while others just a few. Even if the symptoms are not showing damage is being done to the central nervous system, damage that gets worse and with the passing of time. Treatments are available now in many forms but it is important that the patient stays in therapy if the chance to slow the action of the disorder is ever to exist.

The way that the disease actually works is that because the nervous cell loses its myelin its more predisposed to get damaged. The optic nerve suffers some serious damage because of this: it gets swollen causing blurry vision in a matter of days after it has started. Pain may also be felt especially when moving the eye.

There are two types of diabetes: the type 1 diabetes and the type 2 diabetes. The first type of diabetes is less common than the first. The diabetes type 1 affects people who are younger, some in their teenage years. This happens because this diabetes type is mainly associated with the lack of insulin in ones body. The first signs of diabetes can be very mild or on the contrary very abrupt. It all depends on the person that suffers from diabetes.

The cause of type 1 diabetes is the islet cells of the pancreas. When your body starts to see one of your tissues as foreign, that is when this type of diabetes happens. This is a mistake of the immune system. In the case of diabetes, type 1, the cells that are seen as the enemy are the ones that produce insulin, the islet cells. The body then starts to fight against them, reducing their ability of producing insulin, thus leading to diabetes. The main cause for this disorder that leads to diabetes is genetics. It can also be a result of a viral infection, measles, rubella, polio that can be the cause of diabetes. Some of the people may also have a genetical tendency to develop diabetes. For example, two people are infected with the same virus, but only one of them develops diabetes. This is because that person is more prone to diabetes than the other. There are some other causes for this type of diabetes, but they are very rare. One of the diabetes causes may be an injury to the pancreas.

The best treatment for this diabetes type 1 is with shots of insulin. When you have diabetes, the insulin is injected under your skin, in the fat. This way it is absorbed into the blood and taken to all the cells of the body that need it. This diabetes treatment can not be taken in the from of a pill, because the juices found in our stomach would destroy it even before it would have a chance to work. At the moment there are no other methods for this diabetes treatment besides shots. Scientist are still working to find new ways of giving insulin to patients who have diabetes. Insulin pumps for diabetes are being tested at the moment, but there is nothing certain yet. Using insulin is the only diabetes treatment used in our days.

Vascular headache is the most common and frequent of all type of headaches that people suffer from these days.

How Does A Vascular Headache Occur?

The shortage of blood supply to the brain causes vascular headache. Migraine, for example, is one type of vascular headache. The short supply of blood to the brain may occur for different reasons like extreme cold temperatures, stress and dehydration etc.

What Are The Common Symptoms?

The usual symptoms of vascular headaches include throbbing of one or both temples, fatigue, nausea, sensitivity to sound and light, drowsiness and blurred vision. Vascular headaches can last for days if not treated with the proper medication and can grow increasingly worse; so the earlier realized and actioned is better to get faster relief.

Treating Vascular Headache

There are an umpteen number of drugs available in the drug stores for treating vascular headaches. Usually while going for these migraine drugs, people often neglect the need any prescription to purchase or administer, it is very important that you read the directions carefully and follow them precisely. The general belief is that taking large amount of medicines would cure faster, but in the process they will cause damage to their stomach and digestion. When taking headache medications ensure that your stomach is full and you drink plenty of water, else the drugs may cause nausea. Effects such as vomiting and losing important body fluids are also quite common which further dehydrates the body and thus, make the headache worse.

Helpful Tips

Grab on the rest in a quiet dark place preferably cool for a couple of hours after the medication. This helps the body can relax and the medication can work without any interference. If even after the maximum daily dose your headache persists, you should consult a doctor and he would best recommend the apt treatment suitable for you. It is extremely important you know the cause of your headaches and verify if it is due to certain existing medical condition and cannot be helped by taking more medications for it.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the Koch bacillus, a germ that belongs to the Mycoba

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the Koch bacillus, a germ that belongs to the Mycobacterium family. It primarily affects the lungs and it is contagious. Besides the lungs, TB can also affect lymph nodes, intestinal tract, kidneys, bones, and brain.

If you have a strong immune system you could not get ill of TB even if you come in contact with infected subjects. You could also inactivate the virus and keep it locked in your lungs by creating with the help of macrophages a scar tissue all around the infected area, but in the moment you get a weaker immune system (like those people who have HIV) the bacillus could reactivate and manifest and even infect other organs.

Symptoms of TB infection are: cough that lasts longer than three weeks, fever, breathing problems, night sweats, fatigability, chest pains, and loss of weight and appetite.

TB is transmittable from mother to fetus and symptoms of the infection appear during the first year of life: fever, poor feeding, breathing problems, failure to thrive and even swollen liver and spleen.

Healthy persons receive the infection if living or working in the same place with the infected person. By coughing, shouting or sneezing, the infected person spreads the germs into the air, and others inhale them. Shaking hands or touching clothes does not infect others.

Another form of tuberculosis is transmitted by drinking unpasteurized milk. The responsible bacterium for this form of TB infection is called Mycobacterium bovis. Years before, this bacterium was a major cause of TB in children, but now since most milk is pasteurized (a heating process that kills the bacteria) it does not cause TB any more.

There are some tests doctors do to find out if one is infected. First of all, they perform a skin test, meaning that they inject into your skin a purified protein derived for the TB germ. After more then 48 hours the injected skin area will present a bump. If the bump is large, the test is considered to be positive, meaning that the TB infection has occurred. If this test does not convince doctors about your condition, they will ask you to do a thoracic X-ray which shows where in the lungs the infection could be localized and how greatly it is expanded. If the suspected person coughs, doctors take the sputum and with the help of the microscope they search for the TB germs in the sputum. This is quite an accurate method of diagnosing TB.

The HIV patients are at high risk of developing TB, due to their weakened immune system. Some of them are infected with TB and the virus is not active, but at any moment the virus can wake up and manifest. In the world, there are about 38 million people living with AIDS and about one-third of them also have TB. Very often tuberculosis affects the HIV patients long before other problems correlated with HIV develop.

Tuberculosis seems to appear more frequent in crowded, non-hygienic places like: prisons, juvenile detention centers, and homeless shelters.

General preventing methods of spreading the TB is hospitalizing the infected person, and practically isolating it from those who are healthy. Treatment must be followed at least 6 months constantly because interrupting the treatment could lead to spreading the disease in other organs, like: kidneys, intestinal tract, and lymph nodes, and even leading to the death of the infected person.

For the treatment to be effective, patients must take their prescribed dugs during all the period of time they were advised by the doctor, otherwise the bacillus could get multiple drug resistant and this would only lead to a crisis of effective drugs against tuberculosis, and to a possible epidemic.

A sinus headache is usually caused by blocked sinuses or a sinus infection. This is due to thick mucous that blocks the nasal and sinus passages. The resulting headache may be difficult to get rid of. Continually taking medications can cause side effects and may be responsible for long-term damage of internal organs such as the liver.

Here are some natural sinus headache remedies that you can try.

Make sure you drink enough water to stay hydrated. As mucous thickens, it blocks the sinus and thus causing a headache. At the first signs of a sinus headache you should increase your water intake. If possible stick to clear liquids such as water and tea as these help irrigate the body quickly. You may not be drinking enough if your nose is stuffy. Keep a bottle of water with you and take small sips from it throughout the day. Dehydration can contribute to a headache.

Sinus headaches are most common in dry weather because sinuses become dry and clogged. There are ways to increase the humidity in the air. You can either use a portable humidifier or boil some water on the stove to humidify the air. A common sinus headache remedy is to create a steam tent for your face. Lean over a pot of steaming water and place a towel over your head to help keep the steam in. Inhale the steam for 5 minutes at a time. This will help thin the mucous and relieve a sinus headache.

Another sinus headache remedy is to apply a hot wet compress to the face. Wet a washcloth with hot water and fold to fit over the nose and cheeks, putting warmth directly over the sinus and nasal cavities. This will help loosen the mucous and ease the pressure of a sinus headache. You can use a cold compress on the forehead to help shrink the membranes and ease the pain of a headache. This is especially helpful at the onset of a headache and may lessen the severity.

There are herbal remedies for sinus headache that can be just as effective. Some herbs can ease the pain associated with a sinus headache.

Add peppermint or eucalyptus to boiling water and inhale the steam. This helps to immediately open up nasal passages and makes breathing easier.

Grapeseed extract helps to ease sinus headache pain and shrink membranes.

Feverfew contains substances that inhibit the release of mood hormones in the brain. For best results, use fresh feverfew. When this isn't available, consume as tea or in capsule form. Some doctors recommend taking feverfew with bay to prevent a sinus headache. You can often find this combination available in a health food store.

Ginger has long been known to relieve and also to prevent headaches. It is anti-inflammatory and contains substances that help to relieve pain. Take in capsule form, according to directions.

You may need to try several sinus headache remedies to find one that works for you. Most of the sinus headache home and herbal remedies mentioned above are safe and effective, without the negative side effects associated with drug medications.

Sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an infection that affects the sinuses in the body. Sinu

Sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an infection that affects the sinuses in the body. Sinuses are the hollow spaces or cavities near the bones in the skull around the nose. Sinusitis is the swelling of these sinuses because of some allergic or immune reaction that causes the sinuses to be blocked. This blockage causes air to be trapped inside the sinuses along with other secretions like pus, putting pressure on the sinus walls. This pressure produces pain and a lot of discomfort, often referred to as a sinus attack. Sinus infection is a very common allergy that affects million of people throughout the world every year. Millions of dollars are spent for sinus medications and sinus research. Sinus infections may occur because of some viral or fungal infections.

There are different kinds of sinuses: frontal sinuses (over the eyes in the brow area), maxillary sinuses (inside each cheekbone), ethmoid sinuses (just behind the bridge of the nose and between the eyes), and sphenoid sinuses (behind the ethmoids in the upper region of the nose and behind the eyes). Any part of these four sinuses can be infected, causing pain in that particular area. The most common symptoms of sinus infections are pain in the head, ear or neck; headaches early in the morning; pain in the upper jaw/ cheeks/ teeth; swelling of the eyelids; pain between the eyes; stuffy nose; loss of smell; and tenderness near the nose. Sometimes, there could be fever, tiredness, weakness, severe cough, and runny nose. Very rarely, acute sinusitis can lead to infection in the brain or some other complications.

There are three kinds of sinus attacks: acute (up to three weeks), chronic (three to eight weeks or more), and recurring (frequent attacks within a year). Most sinus attacks start because of a viral cold. Fungal infections can also cause sinusitis, especially in people who have weak immune systems and are prone to allergies. Infections like hay fever or allergic rhinitis can also lead to acute sinusitis. People with weak immune systems, like those with HIV infection, and those who have mucus secretion abnormalities are also more prone to sinusitis.

The most common treatment for sinusitis is a decongestant to reduce the congestion in the nose, antibiotics for the infection, and pain relievers for any pain. There are over-the-counter decongestants and sprays available that can provide some relief. However, these should be used only for a few days. It is advisable to consult a specialist if the infection exists for long time. Acute sinusitis can be treated with antibiotics and decongestants but chronic sinusitis takes a longer time and is usually difficult to treat because it could be linked to some other infection like asthma. In such cases, doctors may also prescribe steroids for relief. Some people may also require surgery.

There are also easy home remedies for providing relief from sinusitis. Inhaling steam, saline nasal spray, gentle heat application over the inflamed area, lying down in a darkened room, decoction of mustard seeds and water instilled in the nostrils, drinking juice of ripe grapes, jalapeno pepper, inhalation of peppermint steam, applying a paste of cinnamon and water or dry ginger and water, etc. are some of the most commonly used home remedies for sinus infections.

In our society today, there are many people who are not well. They struggle with sickness, illness, and disease. Indeed, there are eight deadly public health enemies that are sending many Americans to an early grave. These health enemies kill more than 24 million people a year and cause untold suffering and disability on millions of others. Let's discover what they are.

Public Health Enemy #1: Heart Disease

Contrary to the opinion of many, heart disease isn't a disease of cholesterol but of artery inflammation. Many people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol. So, what is the true culprit here? "Oxidized" LDL, excessive free radicals caused by hypertension, diabetes, smoking, fatty meals, and elevated insulin levels. These problems, however, can be eliminated and the risks of heart disease significantly lowered.

Public Health Enemy #2: Cancer

In spite of millions of dollars spent on research and great advances in diagnosis and treatment of cancer, for many people who have cancer, many times the outcome is still a painful death. Cancer appears to develop from damage to the DNA of our cells by unstable molecules that have been occurring from 10-20 years.

Public Health Enemy #3: Stroke

Strokes can be deadly and typically occur suddenly with no warning. In the New England Journal of Medicine in 1995, Dr. Meir Stampfer reported that: "15 percent of all strokes could be related to elevated homocysteine, a by-product of protein metabolism that is elevated in individuals who have low levels of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12."

Pubic Health Enemy #4: Diabetes

More and more people are suffering from and/or developing diabetes. This seems to be the result of insulin resistance. Many doctors treat the blood sugar level problem instead of the real problem, which is insulin resistance. There are many things people can do to prevent diabetes from developing to begin with.

Public Health Enemy #5: Osteoporosis

More than 25 million North American have osteoporosis. Poor bone health is the result many times of nutritional decencies. Failure to have adequate amounts of vitamins such as B6, C, D, K, folic acid, magnesium, zinc, and cooper, are a few essential vitamins in which inadequate amounts can result in poor bone health.

Public Health Enemy #6: Arthritis

Millions of people, over 165 million, have this painful and debilitating disease. More than 70-80% of the population over age 50 have some form of arthritis. Not only do non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication does not appear to slow the steady progression of this disease, but they also cause dangerous side effects which has resulted in hospitalization for some people and death others.

Public Health Enemy #7: Alzheimer's

This disease is caused by oxidative stress. Over 29 million people suffer from dementia.

Pubic Health Enemy #8: Obesity

For the young and old, obesity is a huge problem. Also disturbing is the fact that for the first time in history, there are more obese people than people of normal weight. Many researchers are beginning to find obesity is related to insulin resistance as well .

So, there they are. The eight deadly public health enemies that are killing and debilitating millions. The good news is there is ammunition that everyone can have in his or her arsenal to fight back. What type of ammunition is needed? The "Top Ten Ways to Combat the Eight Deadly Public Health Enemies" will reveal just what they are.

The prevalence of diabetes has been steadily increasing world over. Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal.

It is estimated that more than 2000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed everyday in the United States alone. While symptoms of Type 1 diabetes are usually obvious, Type 2 often shows few or no symptoms. After a meal, food is broken down into a sugar called glucose, which is carried by the blood to cells through out the body. Cells use the hormone insulin, made in the pancreas, to process blood glucose into energy. Diabetics have problems converting food to energy.

People develop type 2 diabetes because the cells in the muscles, liver and fat do not use insulin properly. Eventually, the pancreas cannot make enough insulin to fulfill the bodys needs. As a result, the amount of glucose in the blood increases while the cells are starved of energy. Over the years high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to complication such as heart ailments, blindness, kidney disease, nerve problems, gum infections and amputation.

Rapid increase in population, increased longevity and high ethnic susceptibility to diabetes, coupled with rapid urbanization and deviation from traditional lifestyle continue to trigger diabetes cases. While a lot of work is underway to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, people at risk should be screened regularly to prevent the ailment. And those who have already been detected with diabetes should aim to keep their sugar level under control.

Managing type 2 diabetes means making a few changes in how you live. The basics:

1. Eat right 2. Manage your weight 3. Be physically active 4. Dont smoke 5. Keep you blood sugar under control. It can help reduce the risk of diabetes related problems later. 6. Your healthcare provider may prescribe diabetes medicines

Many people have no signs or symptoms. Symptoms may be so mild that you dont even notice them. Here is what to look for

1. Increased thirst 2. Increased hunger 3. Fatigue 4. Increased urination especially at night 5. Weight loss 6. Blurred vision 7. Sores that do not heal 8. Genital itching or regular episodes of thrush

One in every six people with diabetes will have foot ulcer during their lifetime, each year, four million people worldwide get a foot ulcer. Cost of treating foot problems is enormous. Majority of the patients only report after they have infected foot ulcers with systemic complication. It is important to diagnose the problem at the earliest in order cure the foot problem.

There are many debates over the specific causes of multiple sclerosis. However, in the absence of conclusive evidence, medical scientists can only speculate upon the causes and risk factors behind multiple sclerosis and other similar autoimmune diseases. Although certain theories regarding a series of multiple sclerosis specific triggers have been partially confirmed by recent medical studies, doctors need additional data in order to identify the exact set of multiple sclerosis causes.

At present, medical scientists believe that genetic factors play a major role in the occurrence and development of multiple sclerosis. However, the specific genes involved in triggering the disease havent yet been identified. It is suspected that multiple sclerosis occurs due to a combination of genetic factors corroborated with a series of environmental factors. The autoimmune response characteristic to multiple sclerosis is also believed to be triggered by prolonged exposure to chemicals (long-term treatments with chemotherapeutic drugs are suspected to facilitate the development of multiple sclerosis) or by past infections.

The genetic theories regarding the occurrence of multiple sclerosis have been recently confirmed by medical investigations. The implication of genetic factors is primarily suggested by the pronounced hereditary character of the disease. Similar to other types of autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis can be easily transmitted from one generation to another. Recent studies in the field have identified the fact that blood relatives of patients with multiple sclerosis have 5 to 30 percent chances of developing the disease as well. While identical twins (sharing many genetic features) of patients with multiple sclerosis present the highest risk of developing the disease over time, the risks of inheriting multiple sclerosis are slightly lower for second and third degree relatives.

Another plausible theory incriminates infectious agents as the main triggers for multiple sclerosis. The implication of certain infectious agents in causing and sustaining the progression of multiple sclerosis may explain why this form of autoimmune disease tends to affect people of all ages and regardless of gender and ethnical provenience. Another reason why infectious agents are considered to have a major implication in multiple sclerosis consists in the similarities between the morphology of myelin and certain groups of infectious viral agents.

Some viral agents are very similar to myelin, the protein that is primarily destroyed in multiple sclerosis. These similarities may be the main reason why the immune system becomes confused and fights against healthy nerve cells covered in myelin. The categories of infectious agents believed to have a role in the development of multiple sclerosis are herpes viruses (HHV-6 the cause of childhood roseola), Chlamydia Pneumoniae (atypical group of bacteria associated with inflammation of the circulatory system), the Epstein-Barr virus (responsible for causing mononucleosis), measles virus, retroviruses (HIV, HTLV-I, HTLV-II) and polyomavirus.

Other potential causes of multiple sclerosis are physical traumas (injuries at the level of the spinal cord), as well as emotional stress (recent studies have revealed that the symptoms of multiple sclerosis are amplified on the premises of emotional stress).

What causes prostate cancer? The world around you. Doctors and scientists are starting to take note of the environmental factors as a serious cancer risk, and the cancer prevention techniques many suggest may not always be possible depending on where you live.

What Environmental Factors Can Put You At Risk?

Many scientists have begun to link the occupation of farming to prostate cancer in an attempt to answer the What causes prostate cancer question. Why farmers? There are several reasons that farmers might have a higher risk of prostate cancer than other occupations. One reason farmers might have a higher susceptibility to conditions like prostate cancer is some of the chemicals they use in their daily jobs. Pesticides and growth enhancers have both been linked to problems with the human body, and because these chemicals have not been existence long enough to complete long term studies on their effects on the human body, it is quite possible that they are the reason for the higher risk to farmers. Another possible reason to the answer What causes prostate cancer in terms of those in the farm industry is engine exhaust. Farmers work around many different kinds of vehicles, and the fumes each engine puts off places them at a higher risk of exposure to dangerous chemicals that cause the body to overload with toxins, creating conditions like prostate cancer.

Farming, though, is not the only risk profession in terms of cancers. Another high risk profession for prostate cancer is mining. Most miners have high levels of cadmium exposure at some point in their careers. While many people are exposed to cadmium, few are exposed at the rate most miners are. Because this can get into your blood stream through your pores, it can also cause serious problems with organs and glands like the prostate.

What causes prostate cancer? We may never know for sure, but environmental factors may be putting you at risk. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about your risk factors.

The prostrate is a walnut-sized gland found only in males. It surrounds the urethra near the neck of the bladder, in front of the rectum. It secretes seminal fluid to nourish the sperm, and ejects it during ejaculation. We know the prostrate less for its role in the reproductive system than for the problem it creates in the form of prostrate cancer. One in six American males gets prostrate cancer, and one in thirty-two dies of it. It is the second most fatal cancer after lung cancer. The onset of cancer starts as the person ages, and blacks are more prone to it than whites. It runs in the family, though no specific genes have been isolated. The peak incidence of cancer starts in the age group of 65-75.

Prostrate cancer progresses very slowly in most cases, and does not have any specific symptoms during its early stages. Most of the time it is detected during a simple medical inspection by a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), which prompts further investigations to confirm cancer.

As the cancer progresses, the gland throttles the urethra, which causes the first symptoms. The frequency of urination increases and it is very weak. There is burning pain during urination, and some traces of blood can be seen. There is a sensation of inadequate emptying of the bladder. Impotence or painful ejaculations are other important symptoms. As stage three of the cancer starts, it spreads to the adjoining area. Prostrate cancer cells attack the bones as they advance. A deep bone pain in the legs, hip and backbone should alert the patient about the possibility of this disease. When it reaches stage four, the cancer cells are transported by the lymphatic system and bloodstream and create secondary tumors in the lymphatic nodes, called metastatic prostrate cancer.

Diagnosing prostrate cancer is done in stages. When DRE needs further investigation a Prostrate Specific Antigen (PSA) test is done, which indicates the possibility of cancer. A biopsy done using a number of samples from different areas of the prostrate should confirm the presence of cancer. The treatment options are radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy and hormone therapy. But, as most of the patients are old and the progress of the disease is slow, many men opt to wait, observe and seek only symptomatic relief.

Testing for diabetes basically involves testing for high blood sugar levels. There are many different ways of testing for diabetes including lab blood tests, urine tests, hba1c tests and glucose test.

The lab blood tests are probably the most accurate and must be completed several times over a period of time to gain an understanding of your blood sugar levels and whether or not they are abnormal.

Diabetes home testing basically involves the testing of a urine sample. These are best if you suspect you may be diabetic and would like to have some inclination about your condition before setting up an appointment with a doctor.

Diabetes glucose testing works by detecting your tolerance of glucose. You will go to the doctor and they will take blood samples at regular intervals to measure your blood sugar levels. You will be asked to drink a liquid containing glucose. You may feel a bit sick after drinking this, but the side effects should go away quickly.

Testing for diabetes may seem complicated and it can be difficult to keep a good record of your blood sugar levels, but it is so important to have this done. Treating diabetes early and effectively allots you a much better prognosis.

Another form of testing for diabetes is hba1c diabetes testing. HBA1c diabetes testing works by detecting your hemoglobin A1c level. This test is carried out by simple lab blood test and works by detecting your blood sugar levels over the past several months.

Testing for diabetes saves lives. Take the initiative and ask your doctor about testing for diabetes now, especially if you have a family history or are overweight.

As the 2006 Tour de France begins and we wait to see who will replace perhaps the races most dominat

As the 2006 Tour de France begins and we wait to see who will replace perhaps the races most dominate rider ever, seven time champion Lance Armstrong, I have a different question to be answered. Where will I find my annual inspiration that has given me and thousands of other cancer survivors and patients continued strength to fight on and accept the challenge that cancer presents?

In early 2004 at the age of 43 I was diagnosed with a Stage III Colorectal Cancer. Like many, I had no idea I was even sick, much less facing a deadly serious fight for my life. The diagnosis was such a shock and initially I was lost and confused about how to deal with it. While my family was no stranger to cancer, my parents and sister are all cancer survivors, I was not prepared for the impact my own diagnosis would have on me.

One of the most important factors in preparing me for what I would face came in the form of a gift from a close personal friend of mine by the name of Chris Anthony. When he heard of my cancer diagnosis he gave me Lance Armstrongs book Its not about the bike. It contained Lances story of his own cancer fight and survivorship and introduced me to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Chris nor I could have realized at the time what an impact the book would have in the formulation of my own plan to fight my cancer.

With the book as a source of inspiration, guidance and perspective I made it through the initial stages of treatment in pretty good shape. At every turn no matter what I faced there was always a mention in the story of something that seemed far worse than anything I was dealing with. I find it difficult to articulate how the story of Lance Armstrongs personal fight with cancer, near death and subsequent rise to dominate what is maybe the worlds toughest individual sporting event inspired me. His words pulled me along through each day of what was becoming the toughest year of my life.

The 2004 Tour de France came along at a time when I was ending my second bout with chemotherapy, feeling physically run down and mentally exhausted but encouraged by continuing good medical reports. I watched that years race with great respect for the performance that was unfolding in front of me.

Lance Armstrong and his Discovery Team were completely dominant. He seemed to be able to call upon some unseen reserve of strength from within that no one else had. His team seemed to feed off of his strength. I felt like I knew where that strength came from. It was the same strength he used to fight cancer with complete and unwavering determination to win at whatever cost. Lances victory that year was validation again for all cancer survivors and patients that you can came back from the brink and win despite all the odds against you. If showed that statistics are just someone elses number, you can choose to fight on your own terms and be successful. Fighting cancer is about attitude and Lance was displaying it for the whole world to see.

As the 2005 Tour de France approached I was in the beginning stages of being able to call myself a cancer survivor. My cancer had miracously responded to the pre-surgical treatment and up to that point cancer was no longer detectable in my body. Colorectal cancer has an extremely high rate of recurrence and I had to stay on top of it but I was beginning to see some light at the end of the tunnel. As a means of fulfilling my obligation of the cured that I believe all survivors have to those who come after them, I began to raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and was anticipating Lances attempt to win his seventh straight Tour de France.

As the 2005 Tour de France unfolded it was very different for Lance Armstrong and his team. While they initially seemed dominant again, as the 21-day race rolled on it became apparent his supporting cast of Discovery Team members might not quite be the unbeatable force as in previous years. Team members ride to protect their leader, to allow him to draft much like stock car racing, to provide support and to chase down other riders or teams that may try to break away and gain an advantage. The teams possible weakness began to show itself on the fourteenth day of the race during a very difficult and demanding mountain stage. As the stage climbed upward, Lance found himself abandoned by his team members who were unable to keep up with the demanding pace of the stage. The pace of the previous days stages had worn them down. Worse yet, his main rivals were in front and had their support riders still with them. It could have been the turning point of the whole race had those riders gotten away from Lance.

It was a defining moment for the 2005 race. Here we would find out if the great champion had enough left in his post cancer 37 year old legs to once again do the unthinkable, win the worlds most difficult bike race for the seventh straight time.

Somewhere within the psyche that had helped him survive all that had come before, he did not let those rivals and their teams get away from him. He may have been left alone to face them without his team and their support, but it did not matter. He was a fighter and summoned that special reserve from within that had helped him stare down cancer and focused it on all those challenging him now. Not only did they not get away, he nearly won the stage outright and helped preserve the defining accomplishment of his biking career, a 7th straight Tour de France victory.

It was his statement in a post race interview after the difficult day his Discovery Team had, leaving him unprotected and alone while other riders were aggressively attacking his lead that summed up for me personally what the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) means to millions living with cancer. His words that he was left with only two options; to "Fight or Quit" say it all. It turns out the 2005 race was every bit as inspiring as the previous years to me and cancer survivors everywhere in the way Lance chose to fight in the face of great odds.

It is that spirit and determination that was on display every year during the Tour de France as Lance Armstrong competed that provided those affected by cancer a shining beacon of hope. An example of what could be done, the possibilities that exist despite what the odds may say.

Although his competition days are over, that same spirit is alive and well in the foundation he formed to fight cancer and to help those affected by it. While I receive great inspiration from those I have met raising funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, I am still hopeful that there will be a storyline from which I can gain new inspiration in this years Tour de France.

Unfortunately it will not be authored by one of the most influential voices and inspirational leaders for those affected by cancer, Lance Armstrong.
