Each state in America has a different definition of massage; hence each state has different criteria when granting a massage license to an individual. A massage therapy certification from a school of massage does not automatically mean that you are legally allowed to practice massage and go into business. You still have to obtain a massage license from your states department of health or department of professional regulation.
For example, to become a massage therapist in Chicago, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation will only grant you a massage license if you are at least 18 years of age, have completed a minimum of 500 hours of supervised classroom and hands-on instruction at a state-approved massage school, and earned a minimum grade of 70 percent in all related curriculum.
