In the hectic rat race that many of our lives have now grown used to, there has been an alarming increase in our health problems that modern medicine cannot resolve. With stress being a root cause of up to 90 percent of all diseases, it is hardly surprising that more and more of us are turning towards health spas and regular massages to alleviate the pressures we face in our daily lives. A massage is no longer just a luxury but a vital part of obtaining and maintaining good health.

As we are lying on the table enjoying a massage, it must have passed through the minds of many of us that being a massage professional is a good career choice. After all, with the increasing demand for massages in the last decade, there has been a huge opening for massage therapy jobs.

If working alone as a massage professional, you can choose your clients and working hours and enjoy a flexible lifestyle. This is ideal especially for stay-at-home parents or spouses looking to earn some extra money. If working in a spa or clinic for others, you can enjoy the stable income while building up your experience, skills and customer base for when you strike out on your own.

However, you cannot be a massage professional and obtain a massage therapy job by simply reading books and absorbing the knowledge there. You will be dealing with the health and body of another human being on an intimate level. As such, no one would be willing to entrust themselves to you if you do not have the proper massage therapy certification.

Such certification is not as easily available as one might think. Each state in America has a different definition of massage; hence each state has different criteria when granting a massage license to an individual. A massage therapy certification from a school of massage does not automatically mean that you are legally allowed to practice massage and go into business. You still have to obtain a massage license from your states department of health or department of professional regulation.

For example, to become a massage therapist in Chicago, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation will only grant you a massage license if you are at least 18 years of age, have completed a minimum of 500 hours of supervised classroom and hands-on instruction at a state-approved massage school, and earned a minimum grade of 70 percent in all related curriculum.

The best way to get a massage therapy job is to go to the relevant agency or department of your state and find out their requirements with regards to obtaining a massage license. Only then should you go about choosing and applying at massage schools in preparation for your new career as a massage professional
